The Great Tribulation
Matthew 24:15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand),
16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath.
21 “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it.
27 “For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”
Daniel 9:26 The people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. 27 Then he [they] shall confirm a covenant with many [Israel] for one week [seven years]; but in the middle of the week [seven years] he [they] shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate. 12:11 The daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up. [7:24]
II Thessalonians 2:3 The man of sin…4 opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God.
Revelation 13:5 He was given authority…for forty-two months. 6 He opened his mouth in blasphemy against God. 7 It was granted to him to make war with the saints. Authority was given him over every…nation. 8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life.
Daniel 11:40 …the king of the North.
Micah 5:6 …the Assyrian. Isaiah 14:25 …the Assyrian.
Revelation 12:6 The woman [Israel] fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days. 15 So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman. 16 But the earth…opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Zechariah 14:2 I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem. 3 Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations.
QUESTIONS FOR LIFE
Pretend that your group is a group of believing Jews living during The Great Tribulation and that you have a New Testament. What would you say to each other about the tribulation you are facing in these 3½ years, based on each of the following passages? How does this theoretical discussion help you face the real tribulation that you are facing today? (Discuss both of these questions as they relate to each passage.)
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Romans 5:3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
II Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
I Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”
